About Rebecca
Rebecca Desmond, proprietor of Classical Dressage Australia was born in the U.K, moving to Australia as a child. Since moving to Australia, Rebecca has been fortunate enough to gain experience in a variety of professional equestrian centres, including racing, endurance, world cup showjumping and classical dressage stables. From managing Equestrian Centres and Riding schools to holding positions as Chief of Instructors and Rally Coordinator at local Pony Clubs, Rebecca has a broad range of experience in the Equine Insustry in management roles. Rebecca has been riding, training and teaching in a professional capacity for over 10 years, and has won some major titles at Royal, State and National shows, both with her own horses and with client mounts.
Classical Dressage Australia was set up by Rebecca in the hope that this lost art will be more accessible for riders around the country. Rebecca travels throughout Australia and New Zealand holding clinics and training seminars. She hopes to start travelling to Asia soon. Rebecca is fully insured to teach and train in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe.
About Classical Dressage Australia (CDA)
CDA is the culmination of years of teaching and training and the desire to pass this knowledge on to others. Rebecca's philiosphy is clear; Be a thinking rider - become an artist in the way you interact with the horse, and he will reward you.
Academic Equitation can be described best by master of the Classical realm of riding, General Decapentry: ' Academic Equitation subjects the horse to the progressive lessons of an aesthetic culture which is intended to develop the rhythm and harmony of his movements, whose essential characteristic features it scrupolously respects, while it strives for a stylised perfection which is transformed little by little into the airs of the High School....'
Through the logical interpretations of the great classical Masters, French Teacher, Philippe Karl has documented the best of the French riding culture. Rebecca adheres to Philippe's philosophy of ease, and is training with him to become an accredited member of his prestigious 'Ecole de Legerete'.

Testimonials
Just thought I'd drop you a quick note to let you know how Poppy and I are going with the training.
She is like a completely different horse, I feel like she has been trapped inside her own body because of the way I was riding her (listening to many famous Olympic level dressage coaches). Now she is light, forward and sensitive - she wants to work, she seems so happy to be with me.
The other day, she was so light and responsive it was like riding on air, and I was crying because I had never felt like that on a horse before!
I am so grateful to you for persisting with me - so many others told me that I couldn't 'do dressage' with Poppy, but do they really know what dressage is?!
Thank you so much Rebecca, I wish I was still in Oz but I'm sure it won't be long until you start traveling all over the world. You are far better than any other instructor and trainer I have ever had and you always have a place to stay when you finally come over to the US to teach!
- Kristy and Poppy
Thank you for being such a patient, kind and honest instructor - something which is lacking in most today. You have really helped me to understand that sometimes you have to break away from the accepted norms and question whether those methods are really in the horse's best interests. Thank you for opening my eyes to a better way of training - Cody thanks you as well!
- Janice and Cody
Rebecca, you have taught me what dressage is really about... thank you from the bottom of my heart.
- Rachel and Chica
T he improvements in Gallie have been amazing to say the least since the start of the clinic...He is so happy now...and so am I - Kylie and Galliero
Developing Lateral Flexion
This short video summarises the lesson of lateral flexion of the horse.
Lateral flexion is especially important with a horse who is contracted and stiff, and one who has trouble stretching forward and down.Bend one side of the horse laterally, get an equal bend on both sides, and a result will be longitudinal flexibility!
Philippe Karl explains the importance of Lateral Flexion explicitly in his book 'Twisted truths of Modern Dressage'.
All of Rebecca's training is based on the principles outlined by such masters as La Gueriniere, Baucher, Cap. James Fillis and Mon. Philippe karl.
Rebecca is based at her family property in Banjup, 20mins south of Perth CBD.
Over the last few months, the property has had a full size and partially floodlit manege, stables and paddocks built. This property is home to Rebecca's own horses as well as her Committed Student's horses.
Classical Dressage Australia also leases a facility 5 mins away with a 40x20m Indoor fully lit arena for the purposes of clinics and agistment.
Please contact Rebecca if you wish to receive lessons at either property, or if you would like to find out more about the possibility of agistment with Rebecca.
